The purpose of an air preheater tube is to serve as a medium for transferring heat from flue gas to the incoming combustion air prior to ignition to improve fuel efficiency and minimize the amount of energy that will be burned during the combustion process. Air preheaters use tubes (APHTs) to provide this heat transfer function. Typically, tubes that will be exposed to flue gas are manufactured from materials that resist corrosion and can withstand the high temperatures and acidic gases produced during flue gas combustion, including, but not limited to, carbon steel, alloys, and Corten steel types of metals. These types of materials offer enhanced durability and reliability for APHTs since they help to reduce emissions or improve efficiencies associated with the combustion processes and operations of APHTs. To enhance the performance and optimization of APHTs through proper and routine maintenance and cleaning procedures, it is critical to note that the accumulation of ash and soot on the tube heat transfer surface will decrease the APHT efficiency level and ultimately the fuel and operational efficiency of the boiler and/or thermal plant. Ultimately, the reliable and efficient heat transfer performance of APHTs contributes to reducing operating costs, achieving improved boiler performance, and contributing positively to overall plant reliability and productivity.
